My Geopal has Max Stamina 4. Why can it only move two tiles?
It can only move two tiles because it only has two Stamina cards attached to it. Stamina cards are what make a Geopal move, and it moves one tile for each one.
Max Stamina is the most Stamina cards that Geopal can ever use. It is not how far the Geopal moves today.
You can attach more Stamina cards during your action phase.
Do I have to move as far as I can?
Yes. A Geopal with three Stamina cards and a Max Stamina of 3 must move exactly three tiles. You cannot choose to move it one or two tiles instead.
You can choose not to move it at all. If you do move it, it goes the full distance.
Do I have to move at all?
No. You choose how many of your Geopals move, from none of them to all of them.
If I move one Geopal, do I have to move the rest?
No. You pick each Geopal individually. Moving one does not oblige you to move the others, even if they all have Stamina and could move.
The only thing you cannot do is move a Geopal a shorter distance than its Stamina allows. Each Geopal you do move goes its full distance.
There is a region ahead that my Geopal is weak in. What happens?
Your Geopal moves onto the first tile of that region and stops there. It cannot go any further in.
It does not stop short of the card, and it never sits between two cards. It always ends up on that first tile.
While it is stuck, it gets no movement phase at all. Each Terrain card shows the regions that are weak against it in its top right corner.
How do I get a stuck Geopal moving again?
There are two common ways to do this.
You can play a Terraform card. It turns every Terrain card on the map into one region for two turns, so the ground your Geopal could not cross becomes ground it can.
You can also use an Item that connects your Geopal to a neighbouring ally. The ally moves and pulls your Geopal along with it.
What happens if I finish my move in my own region?
Your Geopal moves one extra tile.
This only applies to your movement phase. An active ability never gets the extra tile.
Can an active ability carry me through a region I am weak in?
No, not unless the card explicitly says it can. An ability moves your Geopal, but it does not cancel a region weakness on its own.
How long is "two turns" for a Terraform card?
One of your turns and one of your opponent’s. It is not two of your own turns.
How many tiles is a Terrain card?
Every Terrain card has between three and five tiles. The tiles are the stone slabs printed on the card, and each one is a single space.
How many players, and how long does a game take?
Two players. A full match is best of three and takes about 80 minutes.
Agree best of one before you start if you want a shorter game.
Can I put more Stamina on a Geopal than its Max Stamina?
Yes, as many as you like. Max Stamina only limits how many spaces it can move.
The extra is what pays for active abilities and for awakening, which costs three Stamina cards.
Why does this Geopal have Max Stamina 0?
That is deliberate. It never moves in its own movement phase. It moves only when something else moves it, and what it is really for is what it does for the rest of your team while it stays put.
Your turn
Can I play a card after I have moved?
No. Moving ends your turn. Once one of your Geopals has moved, you cannot play cards, discard cards, or use abilities.
Do everything else first, then move.
Can I play cards and discard cards in the same turn?
No. During your action phase you can play as many cards as you like, or you can discard as many cards as you like. You cannot do both in the same turn.
How many times can I use an ability?
You can use each ability once per turn. You can use several different abilities in the same turn, in any order.
What do the berries next to an ability mean?
They show what the ability costs. An ability with five berries printed next to it costs five Stamina cards to use.
Passive abilities have no berries printed next to them, because they cost nothing.
Do I lose the Stamina cards when I use an active ability?
Yes. The berries printed beside the ability are what it costs, and you spend them. They come off the Geopal and go to your discard pile.
This is why it is worth carrying more Stamina cards than your Max Stamina. Max Stamina only limits how many you may use to move, not how many you may hold. Carry extra and you can pay for the ability and still move afterwards.
Can I use an active ability and still move normally?
Yes, you can do both in the same turn. You have to do them in that order, though.
Use the active ability first, during your action phase. Then take your ordinary movement phase.
Moving normally ends your turn, so an ability saved until afterwards can never be used.
Does the type of Stamina card matter?
For an active ability, yes. A Geopal can only pay with the Stamina card that serves its own region. Mystic and Mountain use Sky Berries, Volcanic and Desert use Heat Berries, Ocean and Ice use Tide Berries, and Forest and Shadow use Earth Berries.
For ordinary movement and for awakening, the type does not matter. Any Stamina card will do.
My deck has run out. Have I lost?
No. Shuffle your discard pile and it becomes your deck again. You never run out for good.
How many cards should be in my hand?
Six. You draw back up to six cards at the end of your turn.
Can two Geopals stand on the same tile?
Yes. Any number of Geopals can share a tile, yours or your opponent’s.
Some abilities still need a particular arrangement. Volfrog’s Stick attaches it to an ally and it trails one space behind.
Can a Geopal block another one from passing?
No, not normally. A Geopal moves straight past another one without any trouble.
The exception is a card that says otherwise. Chargaphant stops opposing Geopals passing it while it is in a Desert or Volcanic region.
What counts as neighbouring?
One space behind, the same space, or one space ahead. That is three tiles, counting the Geopal’s own.
It is checked before your movement phase starts. You cannot move a Geopal into position and use a neighbouring ability in the same movement phase.
Can a Geopal move backwards?
Not on its own. A Geopal only ever moves forward under its own movement.
Another Geopal’s ability or an Action card can move it backwards. That is the only way.
How do I get a Geopal off a Trap, or unstuck from a region it is weak in?
Have something else move it. An ally’s ability or an Action card that pulls or repositions a Geopal will drag it off a Trap tile, or back out of a region it cannot cross.
The Geopal cannot do it itself.
Cards
How many Geopals can I have in play?
You can have up to three Geopals in play at a time.
What are the classes, and what do they do?
Every Geopal is one of four classes, printed under its name.
Runner. Built to cover ground, with the highest Max Stamina of the ordinary classes.
Supporter. Slow, with a Max Stamina of 2 at most. A Supporter is there to help the rest of your team rather than to win the race itself. Shadrex, for example, gives every Runner you own an extra space of movement.
All Rounder. Between the two, with reasonable movement and a useful ability.
Chaser. The rarest and fastest cards, always Max Stamina 5. Every Chaser lets your Geopals move through its own region even if they are weak in that region.
Is a Supporter worth a place if it barely moves?
Often, yes. You can have three Geopals in play, and a Supporter that speeds up both of your Runners for the whole game can be worth more than a third Runner.
How many Items can one Geopal have?
Each Geopal can have only one Item equipped at a time.
How do I take an Item off a Geopal?
You have to discard the Item. That is the only way to remove it, unless an Action card or a Geopal ability lets you take it off another way.
You cannot simply unequip an Item and put it back in your hand, and you cannot move it to a different Geopal.
What happens if I equip a new Item to a Geopal that already has one?
The old Item goes to the discard pile. A Geopal can only hold one Item at a time.
Can I move Stamina cards between my Geopals?
No. Once a Stamina card is attached to a Geopal it stays there. You cannot take it off, and you cannot pass it to another Geopal.
The only exceptions are a Geopal ability or an Action card that says you can.
How many Stamina cards can one Geopal hold?
A Geopal can hold any number of Stamina cards. Max Stamina only limits how many of them it can use to move.
How many Stamina cards can I attach in one turn?
As many as you like. There is no per turn limit.
Remember that a turn is play cards or discard cards, never both. Attaching Stamina counts as playing cards.
Can I set a Trap on a tile someone is standing on?
No. That is not allowed. Traps are set on empty ground and wait for somebody to walk onto them.
How many Traps can I set?
You can set one Trap at a time per Terrain card. On a four card map that is four Traps at most.
Traps go face down in your Trap Zone, and each one is assigned to a particular tile.
Your opponent can see which tile each Trap is on. They cannot see what it does, because the card stays face down until it goes off.
How do we agree which tile a Trap is on?
When you set the Trap, point to the tile you are trapping and have your opponent acknowledge it.
It also helps to line the middle of the Trap card up with that tile, but the part that counts is that you both said where it is.
Can I discard a Trap, or play another one over it?
No to both. Once a Trap is played it can only leave the field by going off.
So you cannot clear a Trap nobody is going to walk on just to cycle it out of your hand, and a Terrain card that already has a Trap on it is used up for the rest of the game.
Does a Trap only go off if I finish my move on it?
No. The Trap goes off the moment a Geopal steps onto that tile, even halfway through a move.
That Geopal stops on the tile, the Trap is turned face up, and its effect happens. Any movement it had left is lost.
This is the one thing that overrides having to move your full distance.
When does a Terraform card run out?
The turn you play it counts as the first of its two turns. So it covers the rest of your turn and then your opponent’s next turn, and it is gone before your following turn.
An Item says "discard after use". Is that me removing it?
No. That discard happens by itself as part of using the Item. It is not a choice you make and it is not the same as deciding to take an Item off a Geopal.
What happens if two Terraform cards are played?
The second one replaces the first. A Terraform card lasts two turns, unless another one is played during that time.
How big can my deck be?
Your deck can hold up to 70 cards. Terrain cards are kept separately and are not part of it.
Is there a minimum deck size?
No. There is no minimum.
Around 60 cards has played well in testing. Much below 50 is probably not ideal, but it is legal.
How many copies of the same card can I run?
It depends on the card type.
- Geopal cards. One of each. You cannot run two Injis.
- Stamina cards. As many as you like.
- Action, Item, Terraform and Trap cards. Up to two of each.
Orb cards count as Items, so at most two.
These are limits for your playing deck. Your Terrain deck follows its own rule of one card per region.
How many Terrain cards do I need?
You need at least six Terrain cards in your Terrain deck. You can only have one card of each region, so you cannot include two Forest cards.
Awakening
How do I awaken a Geopal?
There are two ways, and either one will do.
You can play an Orb card on that Geopal, or you can discard three Stamina cards that are already attached to it.
What happens to a Geopal's Stamina cards and Item when it awakens?
They stay where they are. Swap the Geopal card for its awakened form and put the old card to one side.
It stays awakened for the rest of the game.
Where do my awakened forms go during setup?
Take every Stage 1 and Stage 2 Geopal out of your deck before you start. Put them face up above your deck.
They are never shuffled into your deck.
Winning
Do I have to guess or pick something at the end?
No. Getting your Geopals to the far end of the map is the win. There is nothing to guess and nothing to turn over.
My Geopal is on the last tile. Has it finished?
Not yet. Your Geopal has to step off the final Terrain card completely, so you need enough movement left to walk clear of the map.
Standing on the last tile is not finishing.
How many Geopals need to reach the end?
In game one, you need one Geopal to reach the end. In game two and game three, you need two.
Win two games out of three and you win the match.
What carries over between games?
Your Geopals go back to the starting end, and they keep their Stamina cards and their equipped Items.
Everything else on the field goes to the discard pile. Your discard pile is then shuffled back into your deck, and you build a brand new map.
Who goes first in the next game?
Whoever did not win the last game.
Nothing matches that. Try a single word, like trap or stamina.
